Successful Spring Pilot for ELCSports!
Extended Learning and Community Schools (ELCS) has completed the Spring 2023 pilot for our new program, ELCSports. Eleven schools participated in the pilot, seven had flag football teams, and four had soccer teams. Schools that participated were: Barnum, Cowell, Eagleton, Johnson, Kaiser, Knapp, Munroe, Newlon, Sabin, Traylor, and Valverde. The pilot ran from April 4th through May 26th, consisting of two practices and one game a week. Over 200 DPS students participated, and approximately 22 DPS staff members worked as coaches and/or referees during the pilot.
We expect the number of schools participating in ELCSports to double for Fall 2023. The ELCSports team will continue working to offer scaled pilots throughout the 2023-2024 school year with the long-term goal of providing the program to all DPS Elementary schools by the 2025-2026 school year. The projected number of DPS Students served for Fall 2023 is 400, with continued student participation growth as the program develops.
The mission of this program is to provide all DPS Elementary schools and students the opportunity to have an ELCSports program and participate in DPS Elementary School Athletics. This program will be primarily for 4th and 5th Graders during the school year. Summer programs will be used to better prepare rising 4th and 5th graders for the upcoming school year. ELCSports will align with DPS Middle and High School Athletics regarding sports offered and the pay-to-play model. ELCSports will create a pipeline for DPS Elementary students to prepare them and enhance their skills for DPS Middle School Athletics. Students participating in ELCSports will develop their athletic abilities, learn leadership skills, and understand the importance of sportsmanship.
